Toronto Economic Overview

Toronto Museum

  • The Toronto Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) – approximately 5.7 million persons strong and composed of 23 municipalities – is Canada’s largest urban region and has historically been an important contributor to the Canadian economy.
  • Toronto has long relied on its’ well-diversified economy, focused in the financial services, manufacturing, and trade sectors, to outperform the rest of the country in terms of economic and job growth.
  • This is evident in the strength of employment, which expanded at an average annual rate of 1.9% per year between 2000 and 2010 in Toronto, compared to 1.3% in Ontario and 1.5% in Canada as a whole.
  • Data continues to show that the manufacturing sector is improving, housing starts are increasing and the banking sector remains stable, in stark contrast to what is happening in many countries around the world.
